How often should I clean the filters in my air conditioner?

As a general rule, you should clean your air conditioner filters within the indoor unit every two weeks. In more dusty or polluted environments you should clean your filters more regularly. Cleaning your filters is the most important maintenance task you can do to care for your air conditioner. Blocked filters can reduce a system's efficiency significantly. Replacing a blocked-up filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner's energy consumption by anywhere from 5% to 15%.

My air conditioner is making a strange noise. Is this normal?

Air conditioners, unfortunately, aren't silent machines so some noises that may seem unusual are normal. All units have a minimum requirement for the amount of pipe length between the indoor unit and outdoor unit and if that has not been met at the time of installation it may cause the unit to make louder than normal or abnormal operating noises. You should also take into consideration the location of where the outdoor unit has been installed and if proper isolating mounts have been used. This will help to minimise any noise or vibration that might be transferred through the outdoor unit to the indoor unit.

There is water dripping from my indoor unit, what should I do?

You should check to see if your return air filters are clean and if they aren't, you should remove and clean them before re-installing them. Consideration also needs to be given to the environment as humid conditions may result in condensation dripping from the indoor unit (usually from the louvers). Blocked drains can also cause water to drip from the unit and if you think this may be the case you should get your unit looked at by a professional. You will also find that the outdoor unit will drip water when using the air conditioner in heating mode which is completely normal from the outdoor unit coil condensation. Drain plug kits are provided for the outdoor units in the box when new, so should be used at the time of installation if there is a chance of water dripping onto an area you would like to keep clear.

How can I tell if I have a refrigerant leak?

If the air conditioner feels like it is lacking in performance compared to the previous operation, this may be an example of potential refrigerant loss. To confirm if there is a refrigerant leak, the unit should be inspected by a qualified refrigerant and air conditioning technician. Some quick troubleshooting tips before you have the unit looked at by a professional include checking the filters to ensure they aren't blocked, making sure the unit is set to the right mode and set temperature for the system to turn on, and if you have access to the outdoor unit, checking that it is operational.
